Academic Support

High School

When KIPP NYC alumni enter high school, KTC tracks and supports their academic progress and provides them with guidance, tutoring, and mentoring.

KTC monitors students’ academic progress by collecting report cards and maintaining direct contact with the schools they attend. Each KTC staff member maintains relationships with specific high schools and tracks, visits, and supports the alumni in these schools.

Local high school-aged alumni can participate in the KTC Alumni Enrichment Program, designed to help them develop the character strengths and life skills they need for success and happiness in school and in the competitive world beyond. The program includes after-school workshops focused on such topics as study skills and time management, nutrition, fitness, effective leadership, and overcoming obstacles.

Alumni also return to KIPP Academy and KIPP STAR for study hall where they make use of Alumni Resource Centers, a designated space in each school that includes access to laptops and printing, a social area, and a space for quiet study. In the after school hours, KTC provides one-to-one tutoring in every academic area and review classes for the Regents exams. KTC also provides intensive PSAT preparation and one-to-one SAT tutoring for students in their junior and senior years of high school. The Alumni Resource Centers are staffed by a counselor, a grade advisor, and tutors.

College

College retention and ultimately college graduation are a major focus of KTC’s efforts once an alum matriculates to college. KTC stays in touch with all college students and continues to track their academic progress and offer academic support. KTC also works to identify and help students resolve any social, academic, or financial issues that could lead them to leave school before graduation.

In an effort to support students who attend NYC-area schools, a College Scholars Work Study Program was launched in 2007. The program includes workshops, academic advising, and academic and peer mentoring. Participants receive a stipend so that they can focus on their studies rather than be pulled between their studies and work commitments.

KTC offers a range of academic support services, including a study hall from 3 pm to 5 pm every day, one-on-one tutoring in every academic area, and review classes for the Regents Exams.
